The Ainu Dog (Hokkaido Dog) is a thin, muscular, sturdy-looking dog that is impulsive and fast.  It is a fearless and determined hunter, watchdog, guard and defender, and at the same time a loyal and well-behaved dog.  Sometimes used as sled dogs and scenting hounds the Ainu is intellegent and can be trained for defense. This large game hunter is extremely courageous for its size, willing to attack a 650 pound bear, yet still gentle, obedient and home-loving.  It has a good sense of direction and can return to its master regardless of distance. Ainu Dogs form very strong bonds with their families and have a gentle way with children if they are raised with them.

The Ainu Dog needs regular exercise to stay in shape and is not recommended for apartment life as it does best in a large yard and can live outdoors.  The Ainu weighs 45-65 pounds, is 18-22 inches tall and lives between 11-13 years
