The Dachshund is a bold, tenacious, devoted, loving and protective dog with lots of energy. While the dachshund can be an intense pet to live with it is also a playful, fun, happy and outgoing dog who loves to be part of everything and needs lots of attention. Dachshunds bond very closely with their owners and can be jealous. They are fairly sociable although reserved and suspicious with strangers. A high-energy dog the dachshund needs regular daily exercise and play-time whether indoors or out. The dachshund is not an outdoor dog, though, and should not be left alone in a yard. Dachshunds are not good with younger children and are much better with older children.The dachshund has a medium-length coat that is soft and straight, or slightly wavy. Their coat color can be black, tan, cream, red, brown, or a combination and it comes in smooth, longhaired, and wirehaired. Dachshunds come in two sizes: standard and miniature . The standard Dachshund is 12 to 14 inches tall and weighs 16 to 32 pounds. The miniature Dachshund is 8 to 9 inches tall and weighs 9 to 11 pounds.
