Agility Training for Your Dog – and YOU!
November 22, 2011 in Dog Training, Uncategorized
Dog agility is a fast growing trend in the dog community. Dog agility training is a timed-event course with several obstacles that you and your dog have to negotiate through in a particular order. There are usually different categories that your dog can be entered in, including small dog, medium dog and large dog events.
If your dog runs at bullet speed or can run through trees like he’s on fire without touching a single one, you might want to look into dog agility. It can be a bonding experience for you and your pooch. Before you begin training your dog for agility, make sure that he has his basic commands mastered. You can’t expect your dog to listen to you when you’re running through a course if he doesn’t have them mastered. As you move on through your agility training, you’ll notice that your dog will become more alert and confident with each passing day. He’ll also begin to problem-solve on his own and the bond between the two of you will strengthen every day.
Communication is the key in agility training. You have to communicate with your dog in a way that he will understand, listen and go on with the task. Your dog may even begin to pick up on less subtle cues from you without you even knowing it. They will be in tune with you and look forward to training each day with you. With all training, agility training should be fun for you and your dog. When you’re not having fun, your dog is not having fun. If you’re frustrated, your dog will begin to be frustrated with the courses. Have fun with it and just enjoy being with your dog.
Your dog’s health will also begin to improve, along with his coordination, endurance and physical fitness. With all the exercise that agility training requires, your dog will soon be at the peak of his overall health. And of course his behavior outside of training will improve because everyone knows that a tired puppy is usually a good puppy.
