I'm curious as to what other people think about this new trend of people dressing up their dogs.
I'm a hick from Missouri (live in a small town), and I can't really wrap my mind around why people put their dogs in sweaters and hats and the like.
I'm very fond of my dog, but I respect the fact that he is a dog and not a human. I treat him like a dog and let him do dog things like run around, cash balls and sniff around new places.
In dressing up dogs, it seems like we're attempting to humanize them instead of letting them be what they are - dogs. Do dogs enjoy wearing clothes? I wouldn't think so. My dog doesn't even like wearing a collar.
What are other people's thoughts on this? Does anyone think dogs enjoy wearing clothes?

I have a couple of doggy jumpers but only put them on him if it is cold when he has been groomed. In the winter, he sometimes has to wear them at night as he shivers. He does not wear them out though!!! I use the normal dog coats for that.

Disagree ! It borders on animal cruelty. You only get away with it because you "own" the animal. The dog has no idea what cute is.

People dress their animals up because they are desperate for attention themselves- having said that, Tyler and I are never seen without our matching "chase me" t-shirts and studded leather collars!

I think it is okay to dress your dog in clothes as long as they dont mind, you shouldnt force them too if they dont like it My friend has a toy poodle and she has a winter coat and scaff for her, Molly the dog loves wearing her coat out, she sits by the coat until my friend puts it on.

Putting clothes on dogs in not cruelty to animals. otherwise PETA would go full force on dressing dogs. So shut up about it. if you know small dogs at all, they get cold,My 9 pound chihuahua shivers when the temp. drops to 60 degrees. Thus she needs her wardrobe of 10 outfits that are designed to keep her WARM. Why does she have 10 outfits?? She's a dog. dogs ruin clothes and get dirty, like kids do. My 2 large dogs grow their winter coat and are fine . I will continue to dress my small dog in clothes so she can play in the back yard, poop and go on her daily walks. NOT dressing my dog and allowing her to shiver and freeze would be animal cruelty. Don't talk about what you don't know about or have never experienced you idiots!!!

I think it is up to each owner to decide on this issue. I personally wouldn't dress up a dog (except for maybe on Halloween). If the dog is cold a sweater is fine. I just don't understand a roomate of mine who dressed her Whippet in a sailor outfit. Dogs are cute enough without fashion accessories.
