Thanks for posting. I think people underestimate how boring some dogs’ lives are. Bordom leads to all kinds of unhealthy behavior – chewing, barking, running away, etc. Isolation is also a big problem since dogs are pack animals and prefer to have at least one companion with them at all times.

There are a lot of dogs in Mexico waiting for foster homes and families. it’s really sad.

Some rescues are not very organized at all. I’m really surprised that this rescue would not adopt out further than they do. They had a TON of dogs on their website.

I grew up with Jack Russels – they are incredible dogs when brought up the right way! Alot of the craziness and trouble that comes from jack russells comes from boredom.

I went back through their website after they denied my application and I found the part where they said they’d only adopt out within 50 miles. There were a lot of dogs on that…[Read more]

Be careful with Jack Russels – some of them are wonderful, funny, companion dogs. Others will drive you absolutely crazy with their level of hyperactivity. I bet if you were willing to go to Chicago you could get a rescue to adopt one out to you. Many rescues don’t care about distance.

That sucks! Sometimes the breed rescues can be snoody. I volunteered for a couple non- breed specific rescues and they were very open – if you are open to a jack russel mix you might have more flexibility from the rescues.

I am curious to the why behind the distance. Is that a common requirement when adopting from a rescue?

But they have your address…that’s silly. There are rescues and shelters with whom they can partner with to do home visits and check ins.

I’m sure that your guess is close to accurate.

That is really true – and also true about the disorganization. I worked with 2 very organized rescues in California. But in Idaho things are not so organized and there is poor leadership. I finally stopped rescuing dogs because of it and have been doing cat rescue instead – though I think that has come to and end as well because my recent…[Read more]
